IULM University is now accepting applications for the Master of Arts in Game Design starting in November 2018.

The Master of Arts in Game Design at IULM University is an intensive one-year study program specifically intended for students, artists, designers, and media-makers wishing to develop and enrich their creative practice with cross-disciplinary investigations in the field of digital games. Located in Cascina Moncucco, a former homestead (“cascina”) near the main campus which was recently renovated and updated with state-of-the-art technology, the program is well connected to a vibrant local scene with game-related events, artist-run spaces, workshops, and museums.

This interdisciplinary program encourages graduate students to explore critical and innovative practices in game design in both individual creative work and group projects. The curriculum is structured to expose students to diverse viewpoints and professional practices that reflect contemporary issues, in dialogue with a global community of artists, thinkers, and tinkerers. It offers students a wide range of educational modules including seminars, tutorials, group critiques, workshops, guest lectures, field trips, exhibitions, as well as student-led projects.

Under the guidance of talented game designers, scholars, and artists, students carry out their research independently or in small groups, developing practical skills alongside developing their intellectual and critical abilities in working out their positions. Built on a rigorous curriculum and an exceptional commitment to one-on-one student mentoring by distinguished faculty, visiting artists, critics, and curators, the Master of Arts in Game Design at IULM University provides a dynamic and supportive learning environment for students who want to define and pursue a sustainable and attainable vision for their creative practice.

We are looking for inquisitive minds and interdisciplinary explorers who are interested in building bridges between different fields of research, explore the forefront of game design and pursue creative practices. Candidates are expected to be highly motivated, curious, experimental, self-driven, and ambitious, with a desire to pursue a design practice fully engaged with current debates and discourses, and within the continuously changing field of related contexts such as contemporary art, visual studies, digital culture, filmmaking, and storytelling in all its manifestations. This program is intended for students seeking to cultivate a personal vision, gain the skills, and develop meaningful, collaborative relationships and networks.

Courses currently offered focus on nine closely interconnected disciplines ranging from technology, art, design, narrative, and aesthetics.

Current and former faculty members include Ben Babbitt, Matteo Bittanti, Raigan Burns, Massimo Cellario, Jake Elliott, Tamas Kemenczy, Auriea Harvey, Elizabeth Maler, Claudia Molinari, Lorenzo Mosna, Kieran Nolan, Matteo Pozzi, Pietro Righi Riva, Michael Samyn, Mare Sheppard, and Paolo Tajè. During the course of the year, students will attend exclusive workshops led by designers, artists, and scholars.

Please note that the number of available spots is limited.

Graduates in Art, Media Studies, Communication and Graphics, Information Technology, Design or Architecture and their equivalents or candidates who have gained significant professional experience in the field can apply.

All courses are taught in English and students must be proficient in English in order to participate.
