NEWS: PIETRO RIGHI RIVA AND PAOLO TAJÉ ARE AMONG THE WINNERS OF THE 2021 ITALIAN VIDEO GAME AWARDS

On July 1 2021, the Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association hosted the annual Italian Video Games Awards (IVGA). The event - which took place at the Museum of Ancient Ships in Pisa - was presented by RaiNews 24’s Dario Marchetti - who appeared in-person in Tuscany - and British journalist Aoife Wilson, live from the United Kingdom. Milan-based independent studio Santa Ragione (Pietro Righi Riva, Paolo Tajé and Nicolò Tedeschi) received the Outstanding Italian Company award, while Julian Palacios, who gave an incredible GAME TALK on November 11 2020, won several awards, including Best Italian Game for his poetic Promesa. Lorenzo Redaelli’s Milky Way Prince - The Vampire Star - a visual novel entirely developed during the second edition of the Master of Art of Game Design at IULM University and later published by Santa Ragione to wide acclaim - was also nominated in the Best Debut Game category. Funded in 2010, Santa Ragione is currently developing the eagerly awaited horror game Saturnalia. The Italian Video Game Awards are part of First Playable, Italy’s leading B2B event about video games which took place on July 1-2 2021. Above all, the IVGA are a celebration of Italian game design: the nominations exemplify the ingenuity and creativity of Italian game designers. There were five categories overall (see below), and the shortlists were selected by an international panel of judges, who volunteered their time to take part in the selection process.

The judges recognized Santa Ragione as an Outstanding Italian Company for its groundbreaking visual and interactive design. They also celebrated the studio’s diverse portfolio which includes titles such as Fotonica, Wheel’s of Aurelia, and MirrorMoon EP, among others. The three person team - Pietro Righi Riva, Paolo Tajé and Nicolò Tedeschi - are internationally known for their unique, experimental approach to gaming. Righi Riva and Tajé teach GAME PRODUCTION and GAME STUDIO respectively in the M.A. in Game Design at IULM University.
 
Thalita Malago, Director General of IIDEA congratulated both nominees and winners: “We’re happy for all the creative talent who were nominated and won awards at the 2021 IVGAs. We know that the competition was extremely high and that the judges commented that it was hard to pick winners because there was so much variety, talent and ingenuity expressed by Italian game development this year. To stand out in such a competitive field, and against the additional challenges posed by the ongoing health emergency, is an incredible achievement.”
 
The organization of the IVGA ceremony and panel of jurors follows the recent publication of the fifth biennial Italian Census by IIDEA and IDG Consulting. The census data revealed an extremely young, buoyant, and upbeat sector, which kept growing in 2020 despite the global pandemic. The overwhelming majority of games nominated for the five categories this year were artistic, independent games developed by small studios.

NEWS: LORENZO REDAELLI'S MILKY WAY PRINCE: THE VAMPIRE STAR IS NOW AVAILABLE ON STEAM

Italian indie studio and developer Santa Ragione has published Lorenzo Redaelli’s Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star, a visual novel about an abusive relationship, idealization, and intimacy. Initially developed during the 2018-2019 Master of Art in Game Design at IULM University, the game is a dysfunctional love story featuring branching storylines, twists, sudden changes, and a special game mechanic about sexual stimulation. The game is now available on Steam for Windows and Mac Os platforms. Milky Way Prince was entirely designed, programmed, illustrated, and scored by Lorenzo. This is his first game.

Lorenzo Redaelli received a B.A. in Communication, Media, and Advertising in 2017 from IULM University with a Thesis titled “Gojira vs. Godzilla; How Hollywood reinvented Japanese Kaiju movies.” Among his passions are Japanese culture, art, and interactive storytelling. He directed several animated shorts, shot an independent film, and produced two albums. His final project, Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star, was accepted at several international festivals, including Game On: El arte en juego (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Game Happens (Genoa, Italy). Lorenzo lives and works in Milan.


Lo studio indie italiano Santa Ragione ha pubblicato Lorenzo Redaelli's Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star, una visual novel incentrata su una relazione sentimentale problematica che mette a tema il ruolo dell’intimità. Originariamente sviluppato durante il Master of Art in Game Design 2018-2019 dell'Università IULM, Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star, è una storia d'amore disfunzionale con trame ramificate, colpi di scena a ripetizione e una speciale meccanica di gioco sulla stimolazione sessuale. Il gioco è ora disponibile su Steam per piattaforme Windows e Mac Os. Milky Way Prince è stato interamente progettato, programmato, illustrato e animato da Lorenzo. Si tratta del suo primo progetto videoludico.

Lorenzo Redaelli ha conseguito una Laurea in Comunicazione, Media e Pubblicità nel 2017 presso l’Università IULM con una tesi intitolata “Gojira vs. Godzilla; come Hollywood ha reinterpretato i film Kaiju giapponesi”. On December 11 2019, Lorenzo Redaelli will discuss his strategy for turning concepts into playable prototypes for the students of the Master of Arts in Game Design at IULM University. The event takes place at Cascina Moncucco during GAME CONTEXTS, one of the Program’s core courses. It is also open to all alumni of the M.A. Program (to enroll, please RSVP at least three days in advance).

NEWS: FACULTY AND STUDENTS' GAMES ON DISPLAY IN GENOA THIS WEEKEND!

At the upcoming Game Happens festival in Genoa, visitors will be able to play groundbreaking independent games in the exhibition area. Some of them were developed by our faculty, including Tale of Tales’ Cricoterie (Michaël Samyn, Auriea Harvey) and Accidental Queens’ Alt-Frequencies (Elizabeth Maler), who teach GAME ART and GAME WRITING respectively. Also on display is Milky Way Prince – The Vampire Star by former student Lorenzo Redaelli. Lorenzo, Michaël and Auriea will be on site on November 9-10, and so will be members of Genoa-based indie studio Space Backyard, who are featured among the 2020 GAME TALK series. They will present their latest project, Birds of Passage. Ditto for Dario D’Ambra (Maggese), whose talk is scheduled for April 1 2020. Dario will present his game A. The Wanderer. Last but not least, Pietro Polsinelli (Open Lab Games) who gave a GAME TALK in June 2018, will introduce his new game Football Drama. These are just some of the games featured in an impressive lineup, so head to the official website to check them out. And best of all? The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Game Happens (8-10 November @ Genova, Italy) is the international festival dedicated to the cultural, political and social impact of video games. The 2019 theme is Elements of Change.

Lorenzo Redaelli’s Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star will be featured at Game On! El Arte en Juego, South America’s most important game design and Game Art festival.

Lorenzo developed his game during the 2018-2019 edition of the Master of Arts in Game Design at IULM University and was accepted by Game On! El arte en juego which takes place November 22 -30 2019 at the Cultural San Martin in Buenos Aires, within the framework of the Festival of Digital Culture Electronic November. Game On! is the only exhibition in Argentina addressing the artistic and cultural impact of video games. The exhibition will feature more than 40 national and international works, including machinima, interactive experiences, experimental art and video games, alternative controls and more. As you may recall, Milky Way Prince was also accepted to Game Happens, which takes place in Genoa, Italy, between November 8-10 2019.

Milky Way Prince is a first-person interactive visual novel about an abusive relationship between two individuals, one of whom suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. A love/erotic story, between a guy and a “shooting star” that follows players’ decisions, Milky Way Prince suggests that falling in love with somebody who suffers from BPD is like falling in love with a star. The more intense the move, the more unstable the person. The game’s key themes are idealization, self-annihilation/sacrifice for the beloved, and codependency. Reaching the Milky Way by helping the Prince seems to be the main goal of the game. But what is the price one has to pay? The character you interact with morphs his behavior/reactions onto the player’s “strategy”. This could lead to rage tests, love bombing sessions or ways to move compassion and to make the player feel guilty. The main narrative elements are based on variables such as the player’s submission or interest in the partner. Sex is both a narrative artifice and a way to investigate the other person’s body and psyche. The player can use three of his five senses during an erotic interlude. Dialogue slowly disappears and sex becomes the only way to have a “conversation” with the beloved.

Lorenzo ha sviluppato il suo gioco durante l'edizione 2018-2019 del Master of Arts in Game Design presso l'Università IULM ed è stato accettato da Game On! El arte en juego che si svolgerà dal 22 al 30 novembre 2019 al Cultural San Martin di Buenos Aires, nell'ambito del Festival della Cultura Digitale Noviembre Electronica. Game On! è la più importante manifestazione in Argentina dedicata all'impatto artistico e culturale dei videogiochi. Milky Way Prince è una visual novel in prima persona che mette in scena una relazione psicologicamente abusiva con una persona che soffre di disturbo Borderline della personalità. Storia d’amore/erotica tra un ragazzo e una stella cadente, Milky Way Prince si sviluppa in base alle decisioni del giocatore. Innamorarsi di una persona che soffre di BPD è come innamorarsi di una stella: più l’amore cresce e più questa diventa instabile. I temi principali sono l’idealizzazione, il sacrificio per la persona amata e la codipendenza. Il giocatore è convinto che l’obiettivo consista nel raggiungere la Via Lattea aiutando il Principe. Ma qual è il prezzo da pagare? Il personaggio con cui interagiamo adatta il proprio comportamento manipolatorio e le sue reazioni alla strategia del giocatore. Può metterlo alla prova attraverso dei temper tantrum, bombardamenti affettivi e atteggiamenti passivo-aggressivo. Le possibili narrazioni dipendono da variabili globali come la sottomissione o l’interesse per il principe. Qui il sesso è sia un espediente narrativo che un modo per investigare il corpo e la psicologia dell’altro. Il giocatore ha a disposizione tre sensi su cinque durante il rapporto. Nella relazione il dialogo progressivamente svanisce e il sesso è l’unico modo per comunicare.

Lorenzo Redaelli’s Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star will be featured at the upcoming edition of Game Happens, Italy’s most exciting indie game festival.

Lorenzo developed his game during the 2018-2019 edition of the Master of Arts in Game Design at IULM University. Milky Way Prince was accepted by Game Happens, the international festival dedicated to the cultural, political and social impact of video games. Now in its fifth edition, Game Happens takes place in Genoa from November 8-10 2019. The festival examines the most innovative aspects of the European independent video game scene, connecting this lively field with other creative, cultural, and technological industries. The theme of the 2019 edition is Elements of Change. It features two main events: a conference, in English, aimed at industry professionals, but also at aspiring game designers, and an exhibition open to the general public, where people can experience some of the most innovative and exciting independent games. The more intense the move, the more unstable the person. The game’s key themes are idealization, self-annihilation/sacrifice for the beloved, and codependency. Reaching the Milky Way by helping the Prince seems to be the main goal of the game. But what is the price one has to pay? The character you interact with morphs his behavior/reactions onto the player’s “strategy”. This could lead to rage tests, love bombing sessions or ways to move compassion and to make the player feel guilty. The main narrative elements are based on variables such as the player’s submission or interest in the partner. Sex is both a narrative artifice and a way to investigate the other person’s body and psyche. The player can use three of his five senses during an erotic interlude. Dialogue slowly disappears and sex becomes the only way to have a “conversation” with the beloved. 

Lorenzo received a B.A. in Communication, Media, and Advertising in 2017 from IULM University with a Thesis titled “Gojira vs. Godzilla; How Hollywood reinvented Japanese Kaiju movies.” Among his passions are Japanese culture, art, and interactive storytelling. He directed several animated shorts, shot an independent film, and produced two albums. Lorenzo lives and works in Milan.

Game Happens 2019 is an event organised by Regione Liguria, through its in house company Liguria International, with the support of the Cultural Association Game Happens, and financed by the POR FESR Liguria 2014-2020. In collaboration with Società per Cornigliano. Game Happens began in 2014 as an international festival in Italy – part conference and part exhibition – dedicated to both indie game developers and students, without forgetting the diversity and variety of involved ideas and points of view. Game Happens brought to Genova amazing and inspiring designers and artists such as Rhianna Pratchett, Paolo Pedercini, Eric Zimmerman, Tale of Tales, Rami Ismail, Adrian Hon, and Chipzel, among others.

Il videogioco di Lorenzo Redaelli, Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star, sarà presente all’edizione 2019 di Game Happens, il più emozionante festival italiano dedicato alla cultura dei videogiochi.

Lorenzo ha sviluppato il suo gioco durante l'edizione 2018-2019 del Master of Arts in Game Design presso l'Università IULM e lo ha proposto a diversi festival, tra cui Game Happens, il festival internazionale dedicato all'impatto culturale, politico e sociale dei videogiochi, che dall'8-10 novembre 2019 torna a Genova per mostrare gli elementi più innovativi del videogioco indipendente europeo e per mettere in relazione questo dinamico settore con le altre industrie creative, culturali e tecnologiche. Il tema del 2019 è Elementi di cambiamento. Il Festival è suddiviso in due parti: una conferenza, in inglese, rivolta a chi lavora nell’industria dei videogiochi, ma anche a studenti e studentesse che vogliono entrare a far parte del settore, e una mostra aperta alla città in cui tutte le persone sono invitate a provare i titoli indipendenti selezionati che meglio rappresentano gli elementi del cambiamento dell’industria creativa. Milky Way Prince è una visual novel in prima persona che mette in scena una relazione psicologicamente abusiva con una persona che soffre di disturbo Borderline della personalità. Storia d’amore/erotica tra un ragazzo e una stella cadente, Milky Way Prince si sviluppa in base alle decisioni del giocatore. Innamorarsi di una persona che soffre di BPD è come innamorarsi di una stella: più l’amore cresce e più questa diventa instabile. I temi principali sono l’idealizzazione, il sacrificio per la persona amata e la codipendenza. Il giocatore è convinto che l’obiettivo consista nel raggiungere la Via Lattea aiutando il Principe. Ma qual è il prezzo da pagare? Il personaggio con cui interagiamo adatta il proprio comportamento manipolatorio e le sue reazioni alla strategia del giocatore. Può metterlo alla prova attraverso dei temper tantrum, bombardamenti affettivi e atteggiamenti passivo-aggressivo. Le possibili narrazioni dipendono da variabili globali come la sottomissione o l’interesse per il principe. Qui il sesso è sia un espediente narrativo che un modo per investigare il corpo e la psicologia dell’altro. Il giocatore ha a disposizione tre sensi su cinque durante il rapporto. Nella relazione il dialogo progressivamente svanisce e il sesso è l’unico modo per comunicare.

Lorenzo Redaelli, Alberto Putignano e Stefano Sanitate si sono aggiudicati i Premi allo Studio elargiti dall’Università IULM agli studenti più meritevoli dell’edizione 2018-2019 del Master of Arts in Game Design.

I premi, attribuiti da una commissione formata dai docenti del Master, hanno un valore complessivo di novemila euro (tremila ciascuno). La cerimonia di premiazione avrà luogo durante l’annuale GAME SHOW, il prossimo 11 ottobre 2019 dalle ore 18.00 alle 19.00 presso l’Aula Seminari dell’Università IULM. L’evento è gratuito e aperto al pubblico.

Lorenzo Redaelli ha conseguito una Laurea in Comunicazione, Media e Pubblicità nel 2017 all’Università IULM con una tesi intitolata “Gojira vs. Godzilla; come Hollywood ha reinterpretato i film Kaiju giapponesi”. Appassionato di cultura nipponica, arte e storytelling multimediale, Lorenzo ha girato numerosi corti animati, ha diretto un film indipendente e ha prodotto due album musicali. Durante l’edizione 2018-2019 del Master of Arts in Game Design ha realizzato il videogioco Milky Way Prince: the Vampire Star, una visual novel in prima persona che mette in scena una relazione psicologicamente abusiva con una persona che soffre di disturbo borderline della personalità. Storia d’amore/erotica tra un ragazzo e una stella cadente, Milky Way Prince si sviluppa in base alle decisioni del giocatore. Prima di iscriversi al Master of Arts, Lorenzo non aveva alcuna competenza di programmazione e animazione. Oggi Lorenzo vive e lavora a Milano.

Alberto Putignano ha ottenuto una Laurea di primo Livello in Ingegneria Informatica nel 2018 presso il Politecnico di Milano. Tra le sue passioni spiccano il pattinaggio, i videogiochi, il cinema, la musica e l’animazione nipponica. Durante l’anno accademico 2018-2019, Alberto ha sviluppato The Claustrum, un puzzle game 2D in pixel art caratterizzato da un’estetica lo-fi e da atmosfere oniriche, ambientato in un misterioso palazzo. Il giocatore deve risolvere gli enigmi presenti in ogni piano per raggiungere la vetta, dove risiede il misterioso LUI. Alberto vive e lavora a Milano.

Stefano Sanitate ha conseguito una Laurea di Primo Livello in Ingegneria Informatica nel 2018 presso il Politecnico di Milano. Ha imparato a leggere all’età di cinque anni per capire come superare un livello di Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (Namco). In passato, ha realizzato un prototipo digitale del celebre gioco in scatola Lorenzo Il Magnifico (Cranio Creations). Durante il Master of Arts in game Design ha sviluppato, in collaborazione con Lorenzo Martinoli, Stranded, un videogioco puzzle che presenta elementi adventure. Il gioco enfatizza il ruolo del linguaggio e della comunicazione attraverso segni e simboli. Ispirato all’arte astratta, all’architettura brutalista e all’estetica delle adventure tridimensionali prodotte negli anni Novanta come Myst, Stranded introduce sfide avvincenti. Stefano vive e lavora a Cardano al Campo, in provincia di Varese.


MEET A NEW GENERATION OF GAME DESIGNERS

Lorenzo Readelli, Alberto Putignano and Stefano Sanitate are the winners of the 2019 Study Prizes awarded by IULM University to the most deserving students of the 2018-2019 edition of the Master of Arts in Game Design.


The prizes, awarded by a special committee, amount to nine thousand euros overall (three thousand each). The award ceremony will take place during the annual event GAME SHOW, on October 11, 2019 from 18.00 to 19.00 at the Aula Seminari of the University IULM. The event is free and open to the public.

Lorenzo Redaelli received a B.A. in Communication, Media, and Advertising in 2017 from IULM University with a Thesis titled “Gojira vs. Godzilla; How Hollywood reinvented Japanese Kaiju movies.” Among his passions are Japanese culture, art, and interactive storytelling. He directed several animated shorts, shot an independent film, and produced two albums. With no previous experience in game design, Lorenzo developed Milky Way Prince: The Vampire Star, a first-person interactive visual novel about an abusive relationship between two individuals, one of whom suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. Lorenzo lives and works in Milan.

Alberto Putignano received his B.A. in Computer Science from Politecnico di Milano in 2018. Among his passions are skating, gaming, cinema, music and Japanese animation. During the 2018-2019 academic year, Alberto developed The Claustrum, a a 2D pixel art puzzle game with lo-fi aesthetics and dreamlike atmospheres set in a mysterious building. The player must advance by solving each puzzle he encounters and reach the top floor where HE awaits. Alberto lives and works in Milan.

Stefano Sanitate received his Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science in 2018 from Politecnico di Milano. He learned how to read at the age of five in order to understand how to advance in Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (Namco). As a student at Politecnico, he designed the digital version of a popular board game, Lorenzo Il Magnifico (Cranio Creations). In collaboration with Lorenzo Martinoli, Stefano developed Stranded, a puzzle game that emphasizes the role of language and communication through signs and symbols. Inspired by abstract art, brutalist architecture, and the aesthetics of 3D adventure games developed in the 1990s such as Myst, Stranded provides a set of unique challenges to the player. Stefano lives and works in Cardano al Campo, near Varese.
